Janet Van Dorn became Gotham City's district attorney after Harvey Dent became Two-Face. When Police Commissioner James Gordon was accused of accepting bribes from Rupert Thorne and arrested, Barbara Gordon went to her for help. However, Van Dorn told Barbara that the case against Jim Gordon was air tight and there was nothing she could do. She also told Barbara that Gordon may not be the man everyone thinks he is and that he might be guilty. It was later revealed that Gordon was framed by Deputy Commissioner Gil Mason. Unlike Gordon, Van Dorn resented Batman. She believed that all the bizarre criminals in Gotham were the result of Batman's presence and vowed to prosecute him when possible. However, this changed when Van Dorn was taken hostage by the inmates of Arkham Asylum. She was approached by Two-Face and said the criminals were going to place Batman on trial. Two-Face also said that he was going to be the prosecuting attorney and that Van Dorn would be the defense attorney. Van Dorn told the Dark Knight that she would have never thought that she would ever be defending Batman. However, Batman told her that she had to play along in order to get out alive. During the trial Van Dorn realized that all the criminals would have turned out the same if Batman had been involved or not. Joker told them that because of that they won the trial, but he would kill them anyways because they were such rotten people. Eventually, Batman and Van Dorn escaped and defeated the Joker and the other criminals. In the end Van Dorn realized that the city would fall apart without Batman and accepted him. However, she also said that she would continue to fight for a Gotham that didn't need Batman to which the Dark Knight replied "me, too."
