Lucius Fox was a well respected business man who ran the day to day operations of Wayne Enterprises. Because Fox was manageing the company Bruce Wayne was able to pursue his crime fighting adventures as Batman. Once Matt Hagen (the future Clayface) impersonated Bruce Wayne in order to steal incriminating records and Fox was injured in the process. Lucius Fox and Bruce Wayne shared a strong friendship and even served as Bruce's best man when he married a plant based lifeform created by Poison Ivy. The Fox family would remain actively involved in Wayne Enterprises until Derek Powers took control of the company and fired Lucius Fox Jr. After this the Fox family started their own company called Foxteca.
